We Adopted a Family!

I think I may have finally found some Christmas spirit! My family ~ Mom & Dad, sister and her family, and us ~ are adopting a single mom and her two young sons this year. We're bringing Christmas to them and I couldn't be more excited.

My sister works for Children's Aid and when she emailed me the details about the family I sat in my office and cried. I'm more excited about buying for them than for my own family...mostly because nobody in my family is in dire need of anything.

While shopping tonight I found a silver angel ornament that says "Believe" on it. Also picked up a Jenga game, some Blistex Silk & Shine, and some Sponge Bob Bandaids. I'm going out again tomorrow to buy more stuff. My sister bought a little baby sleigh because the mom walks the 9 year old to school every morning and was trying to push a stroller through the snow. We're going to fill the sleigh up with things and then wrap presents for each of them. Then we'll likely buy her some grocery store gift cards. Any other ideas? We have to have this ready for Monday.

Apparently a deck of cards is a good idea. Did you read that Susie from Survivor was from a migrant family and all they had to play with was a deck of cards? They made card houses all the time. That's why she won the final challenge.

Lightsy, thanks for the beautiful card. I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Helping out this family will add to your holiday in so many ways. *smooch*

What a great thing to do, Lightsy. I wish I could get my family to do this. Hmmm, maybe I'll ask for next year.
Grocery cards are a great idea. Most useful for a family in need.

Woohoo! I'm done shopping! Not bad huh? Two nights of shopping after work and I finished it all! Damn, I'm good! *grin*

So tonight I went to Zellers to shop for our "family". I bought $142.57 worth of stuff. When I went through the cash the girl said that I could redeem my Club Z points (accumulated by shopping there) at a rate of 100000 points per $20. If you have more than 100000 points you can keep redeeming. I told her to use as many points as she could. I had no idea how many points I had but didn't have any great plans for the points so I went for it. I had over 700000 points and got $140 off my bill! So it cost me $2.57. Totally made my day!

I got the mom a scarf, gloves and hat set and a pajama set that has a top, pants and shorts. For the 9 year old I found a lego set and for the 18 month old I got a Backyardigans guitar that plays music. Mom and my sister have a pile of other stuff...pajamas for the kids, a stocking stuffed with things, and some books. We're also going to add a couple grocery cards to the package. I'll throw in a deck of cards too Puffy! Great idea.

This is truely the highlight of my Christmas this year! Definitely a warm fuzzy feeling maker.

Now this is the true meaning of Christmas.

And way to go on the club Z points, too.

What a great story, Lightsy.

Last year at Conner's school, we did an angel tree for a family from one of the other branches of his school - there are 4.

This year, they adopted a humane society. So we went and bought some things for that. Then, last Thursday, they put a note up about another angel tree for a single mom with two girls. I was disappointed that they waited so long to do it, but I was happy that a bunch of the ornaments had already been taken.

I went with the grocery gift card. The thing I like most about the gift cards is that the person can use them for things they really want or need or for perishables.

Oh what a wonderful thing to do for the Holidays!
I always wanted to do that when I worked for the school, I figured there were 9 of us and no one needed another pair of slippers, so we should adopt a family. No one would go for it. Greedy little youknowwhats.

Sounds like your family has found the spirit, and Blessing thoughts to the family you're gifting.

The Zeller's points sound AWESOME!
Looks like Karma smiled back on you.

Love to you and yours!

Oh, well done, lights! We live in quite a poor area. Our school's yearly holiday food drive goes directly to families of our students. Some of them really have so little. Every year we have at least one family whose house/apartment burned down and left them with nothing. Anyway, I'm sure that whatever you got will be very much appreciated. The sled is an expecially good idea.

Merry Christmas!

We received an email from the case worker today.

Adam was so excited when I delivered the basket/gifts. He was literally "amazed" with big eyes. He told his mother "you didn't prepare me for all this". Please let your family members know that they have made one family very happy this Christmas season and appreciateive of being treated "special".

I get teary every time I read it. Big Happy Warm Fuzzy Tears!

Merry Christmas everyone!

love & hugs to you all

Good for you Lights!

We went and bought gifts for Angel Tree kids before we had our kids do any shopping... we'll need to get an earlier start next year!

Merry Christmas Lightsy!
